I am a specialist in Marital and Couples Therapy. With
over a decade of work in helping couples I have a lot of experience in navigating the complex web of issues and emotions that
needs to be fixed to make a relationship whole again.
Additionally,
I have studied some of the most powerful and effective methods of couples counseling available today.
This means I am drawing on a lot of research in terms of what actually works and
what actually produces change. It also means that you will be gaining the benefits of the new insights of neuro
science and neuro psychology when you work with me.
My Approach to Therapy:
It is the
age of the brain. While we still have a long way to go in understanding this most complex of organs,
the time has come to begin using it in psychotherapy. I am continuously studying and updating my knowledge
on the function of the brain and how to use it in effective psychotherapy.
I also believe strongly in the importance of the “human
dimension", the connection between therapist and client, the role of intuition and the inherent uniqueness
of each individual.
This means that each person needs their
own particular solution and that with all of our knowledge we cannot know what a particular person needs. I strongly
believe that there is some sort of version of health that each person has that is functioning fully when a person is at peace,
integrated and functioning with coherence.
Background
Mr. Siegel was trained at Columbia University in the mid 80's.
Since that time,
he has gained extensive experience in both the public and private sector. Working with a wide variety of issues, he
has come to specialize in Positive Psychology and in Marital and Couples Counseling. Finding truly effective approaches to
this challenging field has been a continuing passion.
Current Interests
Neuroscience
I am very interested in what the “age of the brain” is teaching us.
Our knowledge of the workings of the brain is expanding rapidly and it is teaching us new things about how the mind works
and how to both get well and to optimize life. So I continue to study the new findings.
Marriage and Couples Counseling
In relationships, the linchpin of human life – so many of us struggle,
but again, there are those whose marriages are healthy and sources of strength pleasure and comfort. Relationships
are hard but there is a lot of research that shows us what works and what doesn’t.
These habits and skills can also be taught.
I can help you learn how to make the changes necessary to improve your relationship and to solve the problems that
seem so stuck.
See more on this topic in the Marital counseling section.
Positive Psychology
I am also interested in what is called “Positive Psychology” what also might be called the art of living.
What is it that makes some of us more emotionally resilient, more positive, more able to rebound from stresses and
challenges, and to have a more positive self regard? And how can we learn from these people and teach others
to adapt these habits into their own personality?
